When we talk about "development," there are several aspects that can be addressed in meeting the needs of displaced persons. These include:
- Horizontal Development: Meet one need for a lot of people. This is the way Village Builders is operating in seeking to provide affordable housing and job training for displaced persons.
- Vertical Development: Help a few people meet all their needs.
- Backbone Non-Profit: Coordinates many horizontal non-profits to make sure all needs are met.
There are different types of needs that need to be met in the development process. These include:
- Felt Need: A need the displaced person feels strongly.
- Primary Need: A need that must be addressed, whether or not the person is aware of it.
- Urgent Need: A need that must be met immediately.
- Obstructive Need: A need that keeps other needs from being met that if met allows the person to potentially overcome those other needs on their own. Village Builders sees housing and income as obstructive needs that we are seeking to address.
